Exploring Vegan Delights in Seville: Your Guide to the Best Plant-Based Tapas

In this article, we invite you on a unique culinary journey as we share our personal selection of the most tempting vegan tapas in Seville. The local cuisine of this Andalusian city is renowned for its diversity and authentic flavor, blending Mediterranean tradition with the influences of Al-Andalus in every bite.

However, we understand that Sevillian gastronomy often includes animal-derived ingredients, especially pork, which can be challenging for vegan travellers seeking to savour the culinary richness without compromising their principles. For this reason, we’ve compiled a list of the 5+2 most popular vegan tapas, which you can comfortably enjoy in any traditional bar in the city:

Vegan Tapas #1: Gazpacho

Gazpacho, for some a cold tomato soup, for Sevillians, the best tool to combat the summer heat, and possibly the most iconic dish of Seville. The combination of summer vegetables and our extra virgin olive oil results in a feast for the palate, especially on warm summer days. A thicker and smoother variant, salmorejo cordobés, is also found in many local bars. We encourage you to try both and decide which one captivates you more. Don’t forget to specify that you want your salmorejo without ham or boiled egg, as it is often served with these ingredients.

Vegan Tapas #2: Spinach with Chickpeas

This spiced stew is the ideal choice to recharge after exploring the city centre. Comforting and hearty, this tapa is available on the counters of practically every Sevillian bar. However, if you’re looking for an exceptional experience, we recommend the iconic Bar Alfalfa, located in the heart of Seville.

Vegan Tapas #3: Fried Aubergines with Salmorejo or Molasses

No matter where you see these fried aubergines advertised, don’t hesitate to try them! This gourmet tapa is a vegan delight. Despite the term “honey,” it does not contain bee honey. Cane honey is a molasses extracted from sugarcane, making it a 100% plant-based option. The most exquisite fried aubergines in Seville await you at Los Cuevas, a traditional restaurant in the emblematic Los Remedios neighborhood.

Vegan Tapas #4: Potatoes with Mojo Picón

Also known as “papas con mojo,” this delicious tapa is not originally from Andalusia but from the Canary Islands. Although you might associate it more with the Islands, it’s not difficult to find it in Seville bars. Boiled potatoes with a touch of salt and covered with a flavourful sauce (which can have a spicy kick) are an enticing and tasty option.

Vegan Tapas #5: Grilled Mushrooms

Occasionally presented as stuffed mushrooms, please note that sometimes the filling may contain animal-derived ingredients like ham or shrimp. Be sure to inquire before ordering. If the version contains Serrano ham, request them to be served with their irresistible green sauce only.

Breakfast: Toast with Olive Oil, Tomato, Garlic, and Salt

The most typical breakfast in Andalusia consists of toast with a mixture of these four ingredients, according to your preferences. You can easily find it in any establishment that offers breakfast.

The renowned churros are the quintessential Sunday breakfast. In Seville, you’ll find two types: potato churros and wheel churros, both vegan. The churros from Kiosko de la Macarena are considered among the best.
